THE IMPERIAL ONION

A bravura performance
by Prigozhin the Warrior Chef:
hysterical headlines the world over,
attention deliberately diverted—
and quite entertaining as well.

So much speculative emotion:
Putin “humiliated,” Prigozhin “purged,”
“imprisoned,” “banned.”
People talking windows
and sledgehammers,
knives in the back.

The dust keeps getting stirred up.
A near coup, a Wagner mutiny,
a putsch, a march on Moscow...
even as 50+ missiles hit Kyiv.
(Business as usual,
the show must go on.)

Was all this drama
just to get Wagner
into Belarus,
to check Lukashenka,
to reopen the northern front
and take Kyiv?

Much as some might
like to believe otherwise,
muscovy is not reconsidering
anything.
“Pass the vodka and wake me up
when Prigozhin/Shoigu/Putin
falls out of a window,
drinks novichok or
shoots himself in a bunker.”

Muscovy fancies itself
an imperial riddle
“wrapped in a mystery
inside an enigma.”

It’s more like an onion:
no matter how many layers
you peel away,
you never find anything
of substance at the end.

A nation of the brain-dead
feeding itself on
patent absurdities.
