April is the cruellest month

For Eliot, it mixes memory and desire,
but for most of us it mixes
temperatures and expectations.
Some want to garden, but it’s too cold.
Others want to garden, but it’s too hot.
We keep wishing we could exchange
a few degrees to one side or the other.
If the mixture doesn’t change soon,
our gardens will be the wasteland.

In short, we’re far too anxious
to think of memory or desire.
