We often love the characters our favorite actors play, but don’t always know the characters our favorite actors are.
It’s fun to be their fan, silly to hero-worship, foolish to put on pedestals and a bit idiotic to think their politics might be highly discerning.
Take Hepburn and Tracy: in an adulterous relationship for years, she slept on the floor outside his door like a faithful dog. Nothing should surprise us in their political views.
Take Humphrey Bogart: a great actor but hardly the most discerning bulb in the box, no intellectual.
Is it fair expect great artists of any kind to be deeply discerning in matters outside their field?
After all, how many of those who are intellectually robust or politically savvy can act their way out of a paper bag?
